Travel, trip and journey

Travel is usually uncountable when discussing the activity. A trip is a visit or holiday as a whole; a journey is the movement from one place to another. “The journey was long, but the trip was worth it.”

Luggage and accommodation

In British English, both are normally uncountable: some luggage, a piece of luggage, some accommodation. Avoid “a luggage” and “an accommodation”.

Get on, get in and board

Get on/off a bus, train, plane or ferry; get in/out of a car or taxi. Board is more formal and takes a direct object: board the plane.

Direct is not the same as non-stop

A direct train service requires no change of train but may stop along the way. Non-stop means no intermediate stops.

Check in and check out

Check in for a flight or at a hotel; check out of a hotel. The noun/adjective forms take a hyphen: online check-in, check-out time.

Use tourism terms with care

Dark tourism and slum tourism name topics for discussion, not recommendations. When discussing visits, consider residents’ views, privacy, local benefits and respectful behaviour.

Idioms belong in natural contexts

Use one when it expresses your meaning. Conversational idioms suit speaking and informal writing; do not force several into a formal report.

Tourism types can overlap

A visit can involve both cultural and rural tourism. These labels describe different purposes or features; they are not mutually exclusive boxes.

Teacher review · possible trims after testing
